Mic T.V. are Dylan Barnes, Ben Velazco and Brian Regan. The main player here seems to be Barnes who is the songwriter. So far he has a couple of efforts on Bandcamp. His first being Pilot which is a three-song EP. The song are on the somber side yet different sounding which at its best displays some of his different talents.
He opens with “An Unspoken Arrangement” which is the highlight of the three. The song moves along a slow pace is smothered in melancholy. I was reminded of the band Low. It’s a very relaxing, calming vibe as well between the acoustic guitar, bells and vocal harmonies. It’s a good song and I hope to hear more like it in the future.
Up next is “Commercial Breakbeat #1” which is more or less a beat. The melody is simple and hypnotic. It’s repetitive and there aren't any changes by the time it starts to fade out. “No Use In Forgetting” revolves around his guitar and vocals. This is another melancholy song that really is quite well written and delivered. The vocals especially were a strong point.
The biggest piece of advice I can give to Barnes is to start looking into making the recording quality better. Equipment is really good these days and with very minimal expense and know- how you can make a great sounding album. Just look Up Bon Iver’s first album and Sufjan Stevens well-known recording methods. I would really like to hear the first and third song’s potential with better quality recording.
Pilot is a very short EP but his strengths lie in vocals and songwriting. He still needs some work in the beats department from this sample I heard. This is a good start for Barnes who at the end of the day still has a good amount to prove.
