Imagine the essence of high quality, funky nostalgia gets stuffed into rocket, hauls ass to space and then slowly echoes across the universe. Welcome to Cosmos, the latest album from Moderskeppet. This album features jazzy, spacey rock epics that are truly other worldly. I would categorize the songs as more movements. They are lengthy and fully explored ideas. Each one is a massive undertaking and luckily Moderskeppet had a lot of help. Help that would amount to thirteen collaborators building each one of these pieces.
There is a lot to unpack. The genre mixture here is cultivated around freedom and movement. Jazz, funk, psychedelic, hip hop, rock it's a well balanced blend that really, really hit the spot. I also love how this album can transcend occasions. It works for a party, it works for a road trip, bubble bath, hell I would be crazy enough to use it during a breakup. It's THAT big of an atmospheric disruption. Who cares who gets all the CDs, are you hearing this?! It's on Bandcamp!
As a sci-fi writer, I can recognize when someone or in this case, several someones, are developing a narrative, regardless of the medium. I do feel a need to extend a little gratitude to this collective of creatives. I have been stuck in a serious writer's block for longer than I would like to admit. Luckily it hasn't affected my ability to write music reviews. The album has definitely shaken loose some fresh ideas and I genuinely appreciate it. Lyrics are not common, but when they exist, they are loaded with calls to action and passion. Delivered in a spoken word/rap delivery. In fact everything about this album seems to scream to get off your ass or at least light a fire under it. Like a call to the wild, "get out there and explore" sort of tugging.
What's interesting is the album is very much sci-fi, but this isn't a modernist take. The music is warm, organic and wild. That's not to say this isn't a fresh faced sound. It's also rife with edge and innovation. The production and engineering is its own undertaking, obviously given the amount of content. Everything sounded very custom fit. There were several hands involved in the production and it came out so luxe and professional. All the soul and warmth was highlighted and nurtured.
There is a philosophy to this album that doesn't evangelize or every get too pushy. Quite the opposite, it lets you write your own. This review is very much a reactionary one because I don't want to spoil it in any way. I approached this album with as little expectation as possible and it paid off. That's the best advice I can give if you take the time to listen. Expect nothing, and you might just get everything.
