Moe Lerma is a new solo act from Houston who recently released LOTERIA. LOTERIA is an EP that contains five songs and to my ears had an emo pop/punk vibe to it. As Lerma states the songs are simple which is true but I thought they were also well composed and delivered.
He opens with “SILVER SPOON” which I thought was the most experimental song mostly due to an element that sounded like a lawn mower from an alien planet or radio signal. The sound is quite loud against the acoustic guitar and vocals. I’m not sure it worked but I appreciated the fact he was trying to be different. The song takes a turn that I wasn’t expecting during the last minute of so. The song breaks down and eventually rocks out with distorted guitar and drums.
“YOUR HOLY GHOST” felt more like traditional pop punk to me. The song revolves around a full setup of distorted electric guitars, bass ,drums and vocals. It’s a catchy song, well-delivered and anthemic. He sings, “It takes two to make an accident and that’s me and you. I can’t see how you choose to bleed/ That’s not me /Your Holy Trinity.”
“BROOKLYN BRIDGE” is another success. The song starts with a driving energy with an onslaught of vocal harmonies, guitars and thumping drums. That being said the energy is quite dynamic complete with buildups and breakdowns.
“HAUNTED YARDS” was a little unusual but a welcome change of pace. The song has a dreamlike quality to it that comes from the vocals and banjo which I wasn’t expecting at all. The lyrics “Stay with me” sound great.
He closes with a certified rocker “TAP WATER DAYS” which felt like the most single-worthy song of the batch. There is a unique blend of Americana and pop punk on this song. It actually worked quite well.
This EP goes by fast but felt substantial. The production is quite good and I thought the EP had a nice flow from beginning to end. Lerma is just starting out and would say this is a great start. Keep your eye on this one.
