No Room For Bullies by mr. RAY is a hip hop/rock album for kids and talks exclusively about anti-bullying. The songs are tailor made for kids and have positive messages throughout the album. Andersen’s lyrics are simple so kids can understand them and seem geared towards middle school students.
The album starts with the title track, which combines an ‘80s rock vibe with hip-hop. As Andersen sings a rapper spits words like “word” and “for real.” The transitions can feel awkard at times but is still something I could see kids enjoying. Andersen’s message in this song revolves around standing up for yourself, which is a theme he repeats. The second song “The Rainbow World” has a pretty infectious groove, which actually reminded me of Gorillaz. I thought this song was a highlight and the vocal harmonies with the kids singing sounded great. Andersen continues with positive messages on a song like “Be Who You Are” where the message is self evident in the title. Other songs like “Different” are about diversity and acceptance. “Accept Me” successfully meshes hip-hop, rock and even electronic elements. It's arguably the most experimental song on the album. “Friends” is an extremely catchy, happy song that seems like it would appeal to a very young demographic. I’d say five to about ten years of age sounds about right. No Room For Bullies – mr. RAY is an album that you will want to pick up if you have kids ranged anywhere from about five to fifteen years of age. I can’t say this is an album many adults would listen to but if you want to reinforce positive messages to the young ones then I can go ahead and give this album a recommendation.
