My Own Co-Pilot is band from Gothenburg, Sweden comprised of Michal Kosinski and Derrek Siemieniuk. They released Textures which is a four-song EP. Kosinski mentions that the music is a “throwback to the prime days of emo and alternative rock, combining a driving, guitar-driven sound with harmonious hardcore vocals.” I would say that’s pretty right on. Kosinski plays into this indignant yet coming of age teenage vibe that is ubiquitous amongst the genre. I’ll admit this type of music does feel like it was made for a younger generation and for me I think it has to do with the way the music is sung. The nasally dynamic vocals seem to just be a staple of this type of music.
Up first is “Exit You” which displays the band’s sound. This is a clear example of how dynamic the vocals can be. The drums and vocal harmonies are great throughout and the song goes through a couple intense changes in energy. It’s a worthy opener with impressive performances. “When The Missing Return” digs more into the sound of My Own Co-Pilot. Within the first thirty seconds the vocals are all over the place dynamically. Once the song starts to rock out I was really liking it. There is another great change and more props to the drumming. The snare rolls were pretty sick. They pack quite a lot in the four-minutes-and-twenty-six-seconds of the song. “This Crying” is a killer song. The song is intense and I have to mention the drumming again. It really makes a lot of the song. I also thought the vocals were top notch here especially towards the end of the song. Last but not least is “Remembering” which goes out on a high note. There is a lot to take in and there is no fat on the song. This EP won’t convert you if aren’t into this type of music in the first place but certainly is must listen for fans of the genre.
