Nathan Quaid is an artist from Los Angeles, California who recently released Psychoseus. The album takes its roots in ’80s new wave and club kids. It’s the kind of music you would hear blaring out of every major club in New York at two o’clock in the morning in 1986. Bands like New Order and Soft Cell were the bands people were playing on their tape decks and listening to on the radio.
As to be expected the genre had its time as cultural phenomenon and dissipated. It was long after artists like Trent Reznor would add a gothic, dark element to the sound. Even later artists like Wild Nothing and Cut Copy would introduce a new generation to dance worthy new wave.
Psychoseus seems to have most of its root in ’80s new wave however trickles just a smidge of darker elements. Given the subject matter of a person that has a descent into madness and whose angst and hatred towards various elements of our society were sparked by rejection and loneliness I wouldn’t expect it to be too bright.
Things get going with “Addictive Affection.” Some of the standards of the genre like a synth bass and prominent 4/4 beat are immediately recognizable. Quaid also has a vocal inflection that is reminiscent of the style. The song is catchy enough and the more atmospheric elements bring the darker feel to the song.
“Foolhardy Lady” is a highlight. The symbiotic relationship between the earthy pads and arpeggiated synths fit the bill. “Perv” is a gothic cathedral perfect for the ghouls, misfits and vampires to dance to. Up next is “Vapid” which keeps the dark dance party going while closer “The Emptiest Solution” is an instrumental song with a more contemporary drum sound.
It should be self evident who will gravitate towards this album. Open up the gates and let the night never end.
