self-released; 2015

3.8 out of 5

By Andrew Westberry

With today’s technology, it is possible for spectacular music to be produced independent of studios and “professional” technicians. Unthinkable Arcs of Oscillation, having been recorded in the bedroom of college student Nicholas Webber, is surely a testament to this, as Webber is totally self-taught in the realm of recording and songwriting.

The piano is evidently key (no pun intended) to Webber’s writing style, as the first two songs on the album are guided by smooth, expressive piano playing. The piano in “Vigené (BZYJKBJPYKDM)” carries a refined, precise tone, while the piano in “Cannon Beach, OR” exudes a vintage, relaxed sound. The beautiful contrast keeps the two songs from blending into one indistinguishable tune.

Webber’s charming, soft voice is especially noticeable in “Owl Creek Bridge” a mellow, fingerpicking-driven tune infused with choral background (performed by Webber) and livening towards the end with clapping, mandolin and accompanying drums. “Pragmatic Daydreamer” introduces electric instrumentation into the album, giving variation to the previous acoustic songs.

After an intermission chock full of samples, static and drawn out chords, Webber continues with his typical laid back, melodic style in “Phase.” The combination of harmony, timely silences and multiple stringed instruments acting in coordination make this eighty-three second song a genuine masterpiece.

“Void” borders the line between ballad, folk tune and pop/rock anthem, followed by a somber, eerie a cappella “Broken Compass, Broken Heart.” The final two tracks, “Small Town Reverie” and “Epiphany” are arguably the best songs on the album, making the most of Webber’s innate ability to write meaningful lyrics and support his slender voice with apt guitar playing and harmonies.

Altogether, Nicholas Webber has proven with Unthinkable Arcs of Oscillation that he is a prime aspiring musician capable of writing, recording and performing music that others enjoy listening to. In today’s music industry, these skills are crucial, and it’s clear that Webber has every chance to attain success.
