Nick Dehod is a Canadian artist from Edmonton, Alberta who recently released an LP entitled Out of Sight. Before we get into the album it’s important to note that Dehod is no newcomer to music. Besides his solo act he is the bass player with a number of other bands. The fact that he had enough time to make an album is impressive enough.
This is a rock album with tinges of folk in there. In no shape or form does this feel like hard rock. I would equate the rocking out to about the level of The Shins or Wilco. The songwriting is sharp with catchy vocal melodies which are usually supported by crunchy guitars, bass and drums. On top of that the songs never overstay their welcome with most of them averaging around three minutes long. He opens with “Henry ('07)” which revolves around mostly strummed acoustic guitar and his vocals. This is a great Beatles-esque song that also benefits from horns. It’s sparse but effective. After “Henry ('07)” Dehod starts to rock out a bit more. Next up is “Outta Sight” which is a relatively straightforward song but has great delivery. Dehod has a palatable voice which doesn't need much else to sound good. “Woke Up” felt like “the single” of the batch. It has a simple hook that sounds hopeful and life affirming. He sings, “I want to love you everyday.” That Wilco vibe came out on “Comfort Kills” while “Who Hurt You” is a fun, folk romp with some very welcome horns. Dehod rocks out the hardest on “Love You Now” and closes with “We Are The Light” which is a reflective, nostalgic song that is one of the verified highlights. There aren't many holes in Out of Sight. The album has a good flow with just enough diversity. Not an easy feat. Dehod has some indisputable talent as a songwriter that comes out on this album. Recommended.
