Chaotic guitar sounds and downright dirty grooves define the No Range album Dog Days. This is my kind of album, hard hitting and well arranged. Power grooves and melodic phrases help bring to light this album’s grace, combining elements of surf rock with a modern twist to psychedelia and creating a really special atmosphere.
The album’s conceptualization is based on a light concept about “a drifter’s struggle with his own insecurities and existential anxiety.” The songs really help to reiterate how easy it is succumbing to the information overload era we live in. Think of a killer combination of Mac Demarco and Tame Impala and that is a close representation to how this band sounds. Their essence of youth and silliness you get from the Mac Demarco side laid down with thunderous Tame Impala like grooves that make you really want to get up and dance. My favorite track has to be ‘ No Fun (Without It).’ The track really just keeps me energized. The song goes so many places, including starting with what seems to be sounds of somebody hitting the bong. The lyrics seem to echo this notion of someone not having the best time with marijuana. With this comes an epic breakdown into some powerful chords and drum strikes. The album title track “Dog Days” is also a hit in the park for me. Just a straight shooting rocking tune that has me air drumming on first listen. What I have to talk about is the great independent production put into this album. Nothing special, which really shows the talent, this album was just recorded DIY on a laptop to Logic X. The drums are clear and hard-hitting, not weak at all and the guitars are wild and fat with that indie punch and reverb. All in all, the entire album gets high marks from me. I would recommend anyone take a listen and thank me later.
