Aaron Noble aka Noble One is a musician from Amherst, Massachusetts. He had this thing that drummers usually go through where they want to stop playing drums and start writing songs. If it happened to Dave Grohl and Phil Selway it can happen to you. The result ending up being Stars Will Explode, which is a three-song EP of certified indie rock. The three songs aren’t amazing but they also aren’t bad. Noble has an ear for finding catchy melodies and he also has a decent singing voice. The album starts with “Growing Pains,” which is the highlight out the three songs. Noble combines vocal harmonies, clean guitar and bass to make delightfully pretty melodies. He hits the mark right after a minute in. As the song progresses it intensifies. Some of the harder hitting parts lose a bit of their charm. His singing doesn’t sound as good when he is straining his voice. “We Came Together” relies on palm muting and distortion at first. I was impressed with some of the guitar parts he pulled out of his hat around forty-five seconds in. The song is pretty straightforward indie/pop in the vein of Fountains of Wayne. The closing song “Soul Of A Star” is the most atmospheric and works for Noble. It starts with a good amount of melancholy as noble picks a clean guitar and startegically implements vocal harmonies. Once the drums enter it immediately changes the mood. It interjects a good amount of energy perhaps a little bit too much. That being said It has its moments and the singing especially about halfway through is notable. Aaron Noble is largely a case of wait and see. He has some talent but still has some refining to do. Solid start - let’s see where it goes from here.
