October Mind is the single work of one guy from Wisconsin who may for the time being prefer to stay anonymous. So we will just call him Mind going forward. His self-titled album October Mind is one that actually doesn’t need a whole lot of explanation This an album that revolves around guitar with bass and drums more or less supporting.
The album weaves between softer, reflective moments and more intense sections which are quite heavy and veer towards metal. You won’t find any vocals on this album. I want to make one thing clear in that this isn’t a lead guitar album in the vein of Joe Satriani and those types. There isn’t that enough lead work to label it like that. Mind does do lead work but also creative picking and chord structures as well.
He opens with “Two Valleys” which initially touts one of the more aggressive riffs. Black Sabbath came to mind. This song is a clear example of the soft and loud sections that have distinct separation. Perhaps a little distinct at times. “The Fall” never gets as heavy as “Two Valleys” and also has a very ambient section. The guitar feedback was effective and I thought the way it bleeds into the heavier section was quite inventive.
“Emergency Line” is song that more dependent on a lead guitar and also felt less compartmentalized. The song is pretty fluid and I thought the sections really bled into each other. ”Protect” comes out of the gates kickin' and ends up being a really heavy song in general. A blazing lead with that gives you very few moments to breathe. “Help Us” moves along at a slower pace while “Trains Station” has a nostalgic quality to it.
Overall October Mind has some solid instrumental tracks. He mixes it up between the tracks while sticking to fairly consisting foundation.
