New England-based indie rock outfit Oh Moses is comprised of singer/rhythm guitarist Matthew Drew and guitarist Zach Breslin. They formed in 2019 and recently released The Company You Keep.
The first thing that stuck out to me is how distinct Drew’s vocals are. There is a certain aesthetic or possible affectation you can hear in his vocals especially on certain words. When he pushes it it’s an undeniable trait to his singing. I really liked the music throughout these five tracks. There are a couple of different approaches and styles, so let’s get into it. The EP starts with “The Company You Keep” and revolves around soft guitar strumming, light pads and percussion. Early Bon Iver came to mind maybe mixed with Death Cab For Cutie. The vocals as I mentioned are distinct and also the focal center. The opening track “The Company You Keep” had a singer/songwriter vibe but I would say “Hope” felt more like a full band. There are some great melodies on this song especially in the way the guitars interact with each other. The mood is very chill, serene and even meditative at times. “Off” contains killer instrumentation. The guitar work, bells and other elements are all very well done. Don’t miss the beautiful cascade of sound around two-and-a-half-minutes in. “Blind Love” showcases a new vibe. It’s clean like the other songs but this is more joyous and upbeat and it sounds really good on them. You could argue it’s the most single worthy song. The hook is very strong. They close with another killer track called “The Rest.” They introduce very smooth horns here which sound great. This track has a subdued funk vibe to it. Drew’s voice felt good in this context. This is a great start for the duo. I thought the music was consistently inventive and the recording quality was also top notch. Take a listen.
