Oliver Wardell is a young artist from Scotland who recently released a three-song EP entitled Is it Pop Music. His music certainly falls into a category of pop you have probably heard before. The song touts heavy guitars and hard-hitting drums but if you boil down these songs they can fit into a pop song.
The EP was a DIY effort and above demo quality but not quite there when being compared to a professional studio. Heavier music in general with a lot of frequencies is much harder to get away with when it comes to lo-fi.
To get going Wardell treats us to “Is It Pop Song?” It’s a catchy song with a number of well-crafted transitions. Wardell can belt it out when he wants to. The drumming was good but was a little too much at points. Laying off all those snare rolls may have helped the song breathe more at times. That being said the song rocks out.
Wardell follows a similar trajectory with “Ice Cold Breath” - distorted guitars, intense drumming and catchy vocals. This song would be radio friendly if the production was better. It sounds like a song you would hear on the FM dial. Similar to the previous songs the ample amount of drum fills took a bit away from the vocals.
He closes with “POMEGRANATE” which shows off some of his lead guitar skills. Towards the end Wardell tears it up and the drums fills make more sense in this context. The song’s nonstop mayhem doesn’t quit till it's over.
Wardell has said “As much as music for me is probably the only career path I'd consider, I only make music for the sole purpose for people to hear it.” I said something along those lines when I was in my early twenties as well and let me tell you times have changed in the last fifteen years. With that it’s important to give whatever you are passionate about a shot. Is it Pop Music may be just the beginning for Wardell.
