On Time is the kind of band you get an instrumental jazz trio plays rock and has some admiration for Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band out of Québec released a five-song EP entitled Live at the Garage which showcases an extremely technically proficient band that can also write a catchy song.
They open with “Trampoline” which immediately establishes the band’s jazz background and their ability to rock. Listen to the jazzy guitar progressions, insane hi-hat work and that bass line. It’s easy to overlook the details on this song because of the vocal line but I would suggest not to do that. Become an active listener and there is plenty to appreciate here. As I mentioned Red Hot Chili Peppers seem to be an influence especially on this song but it’s not overly heavy. Up next is “Solider” which is a heavy rocking song. I especially loved the beginning when the vocalist lets a Robert Plant-esque howl to the moon. Very rock n’ roll. Without any notice the song slows down into a blues part. The vocalist sings “I was a young man lost inside his head.” We get into some interesting territory with “Devil Follower.” There is a sound on here that sounds like record scratches that transform into squiggly vocals. Something you just need to hear. There are also some experimental moments which I’m glad he explored. A little after the four-minute mark you will know what I’m talking about. “Honey” is one heck of a dynamic song going from intense rocking to space-y chorus effects to slow, subdued blue. They close with Wolfbox/Catstation which actually has a ska/reggae vibe and goes into creative places as it progresses. Live at the Garage is the sound of a band who all know how to play their instruments that seamlessly blend a number of different genres.
