Henry Barns-Tripp is a twenty-one-year-old from Australia who goes by the moniker One Big Jump. On his self-titled five-song EP One Big Jump he handles most of the duties. One thing that should be mentioned is he mixed this album in Pro Tools with standard stock plug-ins. The sound quality was way better than it should have been. He is an aspiring sound engineer and I think he definitely could have a career in that department
The songs are fairly basic consisting of vocals and guitar. That being said the songs feel full. He opens with “Stuck In The Cycle” which is a basic song revolving around a couple of guitar chords. His delivery makes it work. He has a palatable voice that is easy to enjoy.
The same could be said about “Trend Stalker.” On paper the song isn’t anything I would normally gravitate towards. Another guy with a guitar that sings. “Wake Up” felt like the most single-worthy song of the batch and arguably the one that has the most overt “singer/songwriter type vibe.” The remaining songs “Slip” and “Break Free” also veered towards a pop format.
The songs on this EP are hard to critique because of how sparse they are but also difficult to explain why they work. It’s really a case of aesthetics and music that in my opinion needs to be listened to. You hear the expression that someone has “It” but you’re not quite sure what “it” is. That applies here.
His songs are certainly not the most inventive I have heard this year but his delivery is what makes the song enjoyable. On top of that the songs felt cohesive. He establishes a sound and maintains it throughout the EP which In my opinion is something that is essential to creating a foundation.
I’ll stop typing already and let you listen to the music.
