Joel Curry and Kyle Curry are Pansy Boys. The duo based out of Montreal released a very impressive five-song EP entitled In Days of Yore. They create emotionally resonant piano pop that is often powerful and reflective while also being quite catchy.
I was reminded of classic artists like David Bowie and Elton John but there are also some similarities to newer acts like Tobias Jesso Jr. and Perfume Genius.
The songs are well crafted and the singing is exceptional. You can hear the wonderful singing on “In Days of Yore (Intro)” which is almost all vocals in addition to haunting sirens and vinyl crackling. “All is Well” is the first substantial song and it sounds like a hit. The song is lush and infectious. The vocalist sings, “It's so hard to say I love you But so much harder to say I don't So the lipstick left on the mirror reads, ‘Lover so long’.”
Up next is “Empty Pools” which is a striking song dripping in soulful melancholy. It revolves around piano and vocals but they also make use of samples. I have to admit that dropping samples into music is overused these days and a lot of the time I don’t think it adds much to the song. I’ll go as far as to say the samples were well implemented and they felt like a natural extension of the music.
“An Afternoon With Olivia (Interlude)” is a shorter, fairly upbeat song while “Pretty Thoughts” is a notable closer which has some traces of Bowie including a shout out to Ziggy Stardust in the lyrics.
In Days of Yore is a treat to listen to from beginning to end. The songs have a seamless flow that makes the experience fluid, the production is professional and the delivery is spot on. This EP gets two thumbs up and I hope to hear more soon.
