4.1 out of 5 - TOP ALBUM

By Matt Jensen

There are some artists that I connect with right away. I felt that way when listening to the five- song release from Patrick entitled XO. The songs instantly sounded inviting and gravitated towards his vocal timber and inflection.

His songs are a nice blend of genres like pop, indie rock and even R&B and disco. The songs felt contemporary in terms of production but it didn’t sound overproduced. It reminded me of Tame Impala’s album Lonerism in regards to some of the aesthetic choices.

The first song you are greeted with is called “There Goes My Heart” which combines clean guitars, bass, drums and atmospheric keys. The music was great but the vocals are the focal point which bring the memorable melodies. I felt like the song was whisking me away. It’s very atmospheric and dreamy. That being said the rhythm section holds it down. Suffice it to say I was excited to hear what was next.

Up next is “No Bombs Tonight” which has “single” written all over it. The chorus felt like a classic. There was something about this song that reminded me of The Smiths that was hard to put my finger on. That is mixed with a more upbeat dance vibe not that far away from Passion Pit.

“Blue Morning”  is more subdued. This song is so smooth and tranquil. They really nailed the bass tone as well as the keys. There are points in this song where it sounds like the equivalent to a hug. It just feels warm, happy and calm.

He wisely ramps up the energy on “Wings On Fire” which is the other obvious single to my ear. The song is danceable, infectious and sing-along worthy. There is a nice mix of dance and rock not unlike that you might hear from a band like Hot Chip.

The closing song is a near perfect landing. “Never Gonna Stop” is joyous but heartfelt and also quite hopeful. The song is ridiculously infectious and Patrick delivers a great vocal performance. I really can’t find much to complain about here. All five songs were cohesive and also stand alone. I became a big fan of his music and hope you do too. Highly recommended.
