A couple of years back I wrote about the debut release Here We Be by Peter Nic. The album was more than impressive for a debut but really not that surprising when you look at his achievements. His sophomore effort Chances Are showcases more mature songwriting that builds from the foundation he built with his debut.
He opens with “All We Got” which in one word is smooth. The song is slick and the clean guitar have a jazzy vibe that oozes cool. It’s a well written song that’s catchy and I can imagine a lot of ladies swooning over Nic because of this song. The next song “If You” is another song that emits a smooth and sensual vibe. They are certainly elements of R&B, jazz and pop in this song. Some of Justin Timberlake's material came to mind when listening to this song. Nic continues to pour out jams that could work at a party or just jamming out to by yourself. “My Sure Ticket,” “You Wouldn't See Me” and “Cancel Me Out” are easy songs to enjoy and embrace. “Running Through The Night” contains some funk as well as guitar sections that reminded me of pop not too far off from a band like Coldplay. One of the highlights was “Though I Saw You There.” The music is fantastic. It’s an expansive flourishing array of notes that are completely captivating even if there were no vocals. “Solider” is a slower jam that revolves around some effective lead guitar while “Selfish” felt like a straight up pop song. Nic closes with another slick, smooth jam which is where he is at his best. Chances Are is a successful follow-up to his debut. He seems a little more comfortable this time and there is no denying he's built a stronger foundation with this release.
