Piranhas is a band from Tasmania consisting of Phil, Cameron and Nick. They released Flesh Bit which is a six-song EP. Right off the bat I was impressed by the band's technical ability. The music a lot of the time had elements of prog rock as well as jam band type music.
The hooks are far and in between and mostly rely on instrumental melodies. The singing can range from singing to screaming but it rarely felt like a real focal center. It often felt like another instrument. The recording quality is about that of a demo arguably a little better. There are a lot of things within the engineering department that could have been improved. The drum sound could have been more powerful and the vocals needed clarity. Overall, the recording is still a good start but one of the band's goals in the future should be to improve in this area. On that note the songs on Flesh Bit feel like they are best received live. The songs are often frantic and thick. I’d like to see the band pull off these licks and admire the transitions. I thought the band’s songs were off-kilter jam sessions. The band does have a pretty unique sound. Songs like “Tawny Frogmouth” and “No 720 Kaleidoscoping” felt like frivolous jam sessions in some sense. I got the same feeling that I get when I listening to Primus. There isn’t much happening that feels emotionally resonant but the sounds themselves are interesting enough to appreciate. The one song that stuck out and felt a little more emotionally impactful was “Mouldy.” Now the band gets into much clearer post-rock territory here. I liked the song but didn't feel like the vocal parts were working. Overall, this album is far from perfect but there are some inspired moments. The band has technical talent and I look forward to them building a little more of a foundation with their sound.
