Radical Overdrive is a band from the UK that recently released their debut EP entitled Destroy It All. Destroy It All has all the hallmarks of a young band that is still going through the growing pains of trying to find out who they are and what they sound like. The music mostly revolves around simplistic chord progressions that end up sounding like a ubiquitous form of grunge and alternative music that has been floating around for the last twenty-five years.
At this point the band’s biggest asset is the lead singer. She has a good voice and at times she reminded me of a female version of Maynard James Keenan. The music itself is too familiar sounding to really stick. Even though the guitarists can pull off some technically impressive lead work the verses are mostly just power chords. The band kicks things off with “Feel The Pain” which is anchored by the vocal performance. It’s a relatively catchy song but it takes a little while to sink in. In terms of quality and appeal “Truth or Dare” is about on the same level as the first song. A guitar solo starts about half way through and doesn’t stop till the end of the song. The bassist has his time in the spotlight with “My Darling.” He flexes his muscles and I thought the middle section with just the bass, drums and vocals was the highpoint of the song. They close with the darkest song on the EP entitled “How Strange.” From what I have heard on their debut the band is ripe to be playing local pubs and gather a small following. If they wanted to get noticed on a larger level they will need to spice up their arsenal. Their sound at this point is just too undefined and will most likely blend in with the copious amount of bands that sound eerily close to them.
