Real Eyes is a two-man band labeled as traditional, American rock, southern rock, blues rock and power pop rock - this eclectic range of tastes most certainly becomes apparent when listening to their work. The band hails from northwest Florida and is comprised of Blake Bell and Buddy Bolter. The Real Eyes duo has been performing for two decades and that level of experience certainly shows through on their latest release entitled Undiscovered.

“Blue In September” is a melodic and upbeat opening to the latest Real Eyes album. The REM and Smiths influences are prevalent here, but Real Eyes are their own band. They combine feel-good acoustic guitar with twinkling bouts of piano notes, which flutter and echo far in the distance, and sliding, reverberating lead guitar.

It is the lead vocals which steal the show, however, as they burst out into an unbelievable catchy chorus, reflecting on feeling blue in September. The harmonies are beautiful here and the lyrics remain vague, so as to maintain their relatability to the listener. The nostalgia that Real Eyes invokes could appeal to each and every one of us.

“Picture” is an organ-driven, acoustic-laden melodic throwback to the ‘90s era of music. The beauty in this song, however, is that Real Eyes displays that same level of optimism and joy present decades ago and tries to harness such emotions in a modern day world full of so much fear and uncertainty. Listening to something such as this, it is easy to slip away into the musical sound of the ascending and descending lead guitar, joyful acoustic melodies and stunning vocals.

It is remarkable that the music heard here was created by only two men. Of course, layering is involved in the recording and mixing process. Still, there are so many creative and diverse musical ideas present on this album that I find it hard to believe and impressive, if so, that all of this could have come from the minds of only two people.

All in all, Undiscovered is a joyous musical journey and one for those looking to relive some of the acoustic rock-based music of the past, sprinkled with something original, modern and unique to the era in which we currently live.
