Nolan Sorsby is a songwriter from Virginia Beach, VA, who recently released a demo entitled Wherever the Light Touches. I might be wrong but it seems as if Sorsby is the sole musician. The music is straight forward no frills rock.
He opens with “The Journey” which reminded me of the band Boston — especially that opening riff. The song is fairly predictable but fun. Sorsby has a little bit of trouble hitting notes during the verse but sounds great on the chorus. He sings, “You give me words to speak / You are the air I breathe / You are the friends that I miss / You're the love that I've kissed / And everything in between." Up next is “Joy.” The song runs into a lot of the same successes and mishaps as the first song. I’m not sure why but his singing fares better on the chorus. There is a weird chorus like effect on his vocals which make it sound like it's panning. I was again reminded again of Boston, perhaps because of the lead guitar parts. “Erosion” is a solid song. Not so much of a Boston vibe on this track. I kept thinking mid ’90s alternative. “Meaningless Love” is my personal favorite song. I thought his singing style here really worked well. Almost a shoegaze My Bloody Valentine type of vibe. Good stuff. “Feel Good Phileo” felt fun and silly. The song has an odd groove. Almost somewhere between Rage against the Machine and Soundgarden. The verse feels a bit frivolous but I liked it. He closes with “Hurricane Season” which has a vibe similar to the first couple of songs. Wherever the Light Touches is far from perfect but is a demo. For his official release I’d like to hear a little bit more of his own essence emerge from these songs.
