Rogue Chimp, a Scranton, PA, based band, creates progressive-electro fusion music by incorporating the bass, drums, an electric violin and synths. These tools of melodies help them create their “nostalgic video gameness.” Rogue Chimp’s self-titled EP Rogue Chimp paints hues and hints of many musical genres, but mainly embodies a jazz and techno creation.
Rogue Chimp comprises three tracks: “Critical Mass,” “PI,” and “Frank.” Each song on the album combines classical and futuristic sounds with their usage of electronics and a mini-orchestra. “Critical Mass” marries techno sounds with organic ones through constantly forming new incarnations and elements of beats as it advances. The track “PI” offers the most familiar musical experience. Though unclear if “PI” stands for the mathematical equation or an abbreviation for another word, it works best when comparing the melodies to pop culture’s portrayal of a PI, private investigator. A lot of the sounds throughout “PI” echo 80’s and 90’s cop and detective shows and movies’ theme songs. The changing dynamics in the song could also work to symbolically capture the heart pumping thrills and dangers of being a PI. “Frank” acts as an instrumental and electronic medley, with its infusion of different well-known and unknown beats. It is the most playful track on Rogue Chimp.
The violin solos on Rogue Chimp create an unusual, but refreshing element to this type of genre. On “Frank,” the violin solo mid-way through the track creates a spellbinding point in the album. Every song on Rogue Chimp is longer and more complex than the last one, which gives listeners something new to explore with every single change.
Rogue Chimp definitely has enough complexity and creativeness to appeal to both fans of techno-fusion music and general music enthusiast.
