Russ Still (vocals/guitar), Ben Still (guitar/vocals), Kevin Pinson (drums), Cam Still (keys), Chris Hinson (guitar) and Jimmy Friedel (bass/vocals) are Russ Still and the Moonshiners. The band released Still Cookin' which is a country/pop/rock album. It’s an extremely polished album that showcases a talented songwriter and creative musicians.
The album is straightforward and not the least bit experimental. Suffice it to say there weren’t any unexpected surprises good or bad as I was listening to the album. I got a good idea of what to expect and the album didn’t disappoint.
They open with “Promised Land” which is a country song but also very much blends pop and rock. The riff during the verse reminds me of a classic rock riff that is one of my favorites. It’s a catchy song and it felt like the most single worthy out of the batch, ready for mainstream radio.
Up next is “Long Way from Home” which is a little honky-tonk. It’s a more dance worthy song that will get people out of their seats. It’s a good song and an arguable highlight amongst the batch.
“Glorine’s” was an enjoyable track which felt a little more rock based in the essence of Steely Dan while “10,000 Ways” is a slower, ballad that I’m not even sure I would classify as country. As the album progresses there is some variation but nothing too far from home base. “Going Fishin’” is a laid back easy jam to appreciate. “I Can’t” has a very different type of emotional weight. There is a lot of emotional diversity on this album.
Overall, there is an eclectic mix of tones and colors on this album. I can’t say they are the most original sounding band that I have heard in the last six months but the songs are easy to enjoy and well written. Recommended.
