Ryan Daniel Tafolla’s new record Songs From Hollywood is an insightful fun album full of very cleverly written hooks and arrangements. With a great collection of songs that range in inspiration form The Beatles, Tom Petty, Jimi Hendrix and many more, this album is nice and heartfelt making it universal to anyone who likes good music.
The first tune I listened to was ‘Pretend We’re in Love’ which has a great musical arrangement. It is packed with cool guitar riffs that represent the rebirth of the ‘60s and ‘70s. The album’s main theme is surrounded around Tafolla’s view of culture surrounding growing up in Southern California.
“Brain” is a very sweet song that I think might be my favorite of the album. There is a cool jangle pop element to it mixed with some really cool sounding electric guitars. “Surf Song for the Surf Impaired” is a close contender; the drums sound great in this arrangement with a very surf pop inspired groove. Love the little breaks of cowbell, it has my inner Will Ferrell going nuts, in a good way! I get an almost Smiths vibe as well. The lyrics and melody are very much something I could here from Morissey.
“ Feast or Famine” is another fun one. I love the lead guitar riff in this song. Another sort of retro surf rock vibe this song has an overall killer sound makes me want to get behind the kit myself and smash away. Throughout this record the combination between acoustic guitar and electric has really been executed well. The acoustic really helps define that rhythm section.
All in all the record is a great shout out to the retro days of rock n’roll mixed with a story of a lone guitar player understanding what it means to live out in the big west that is California.
