Ryan Day is a young singer/songwriter who at only sixteen years old already released an album entitled When It Begins.
The songs are basic yet well written. With that the production is no better than a demo and often suffers from digital distortion. Since Day is so young he will most likely look back at these recordings in ten years as humble beginnings as long as he continues to make music. He opens with “Love and Hate Warfare” which is a very broad sounding folk/pop song. His style isn’t particularly defined but the delivery is solid. He has a palatable voice. The guitar playing revolves around basic chord structure as the song sometimes goes off tempo. Lyrically, Day sings about various subjects from alcohol to relationships. He sings, “Only bombs were talking / Are jäger / Only shot were taking / Are liquor / Somebody please help this girl / Cause she's about to be getting sicker.” On the song “Runaway” Day makes the beat with his voice. It's actually not too bad sounding considering the quality. The song itself could draw comparisons to a group like the Goo Goo Dolls. “Again I'm Stuck” plays into the sensitive singer/songwriter category. His delivery to the way he strums the chords will appeal to the ladies. “I've Seen Days” shoots back to the Goo Goo Dolls vibe while the closer “Can't Think Straight” contains more beatboxing. Day is at such an early stage in his musical development that his sound could be completely different in five years. I started writing music at his age and it has morphed and evolved so much in the last fifteen years. Day certainly has potential and he is one to keep your eye on. That being said he needs to give some thought as to how he can refine his sound into something that stands out against the ubiquitous singer/songwriter material out there.
