Sathiya has been writing music for over seven years and is also a pastor in Drayton, ON. He mixes his faith with his music on his debut Deeper. There is no denying his debut is upbeat, optimistic and hopeful. Regardless of your faith it feels as if Sathiya is on your side and rooting for you.
The production is top notch. It’s radio ready and fitting for the music. Lo-fi simply would not work with these songs. He starts with “Call Upon Me” and you can feel the energy in his music right off the bat. It moves forward and doesn’t look back. The religious sentiment is subtle and not overt. He doesn't mention a religious deity in every other sentence and is quite open to interpretation. I liked it that way. The same goes for “Your Love” which could just be about a relationship. It’s quite uplifting and rides the same vibe of “Call Upon Me.” The next track “Let You Fire Fall” is certainly more melancholy and contemplative but also has some epic heights. It’s a seven-plus-minute song that that rides some high waves. The songwriting is consistently good as the album continues. “Deeper” has religious overtones that are more apparent. Sathiya sings directly about sins and seems to reflect more on god with less interpretation. Both hope and melancholy collide on “Apple of HIs Eye” while “Secret Place” is a minimal song relying on piano and his vocals. He closes with “You Are” which not all the surprisingly ends in an epic fashion. I’m sure his church goes crazy if they play this song at worship. To say that Deeper would be enjoyed by people of faith is obvious. What's not so obvious is that I think some of the songs will appeal to anyone regardless of their religious beliefs.
