Dan Logan (guitar/vocals) and Zac Hackett (drums/vocals) are SCHOONDOGS SAINTS and recently released SCHOONDOGS. The band just hits the bullseye for a very specific brand of rock. This is the sound of The Stooges live at CBGB’s. This is The Rolling Stones at their most raw and rebellious, This is the sound of the ’70s young punk band playing for twelve other young people who are either slightly buzzed or fully intoxicated.
The album isn’t long which is a good thing, Short is usually better for these type of three chord punk songs which we have learned from Minutemen. They start with “number 8” which is just about perfect for what it is. It’s raw, visceral and also anthemic like a song by the Dropkick Murphys. The chorus is one which deserves a proper swig from a bottle of beer.
The lyrics reinforce the exact vibe it is going for on “rock'n'roll chicks (& guitars).” Similar to the previous song it nails the feeling it's going for. It’s perfectly rebellious in a way that seems attractive when you are still young enough to not feel old and feel like change is possible.
“edge of a knife” is just as good as anything that came before it while “hell or the highway” is slightly bluesy in a way you have heard from The Rolling Stones. “Demons” is perhaps the band at their loudest as they create an intense wave of white noise between the contact cymbal crashes and mounds of distorted guitar. They got back into bluesy territory with “broadway blues” and end the album with “waste my time” which is pretty straightforward three chord punk.
I think that if I didn’t know beforehand when this was released, I would have most likely said late ’60s or early ’70s. The band has done their homework and fans of this style will welcome this with open arms.
