Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sedona is a five-piece alternative rock group that draws upon conventional rock elements in their upbeat, novel approach to songwriting and performance. The band first formed in March of 2016, and Sedona released their debut self-titled EPSedona in July of 2016.
Like many great albums, Sedona starts off with a short intro track, featuring swelling electric guitars, ambient sounds and vague vocal notes that blend seamlessly into a dissonant, yet cohesive crescendo that leads into the next song “Gold Teeth.”
Wistful emotions are layered above alternating subdued verses and crashing choruses. Sedona makes spectacular use of reverb and echo with the guitars in this song, giving deep substance and depth to the soundscape.
Quiet strumming on an electric guitar begins “Statuesque,” an ominous track that quickly evolves into a full-fledged rock anthem with distorted grunge guitars, pounding guitars and bass, and highly melodic vocals. The energy of the album dissipates a bit in “Nervous Habits” and slowly builds back up throughout the song, making for arguably the most interesting and catchy song on the entire record.
In “Dust,” Sedona explores a more atmospheric realm of music, with droning notes and slow, swaying beats propelling the song forward towards its climactic final minute, a pummeling show of dynamic strength and resolve.
The album comes to a close with “Maybe (Parallel Universe),” an energetic, harmonious piece that borders between pop, emo and alternative styles. As a whole, Sedona is an impressive musical work that demonstrates Sedona’s ability and talent in writing and performing various genres in a unique, refreshing way.
