Shaune Murray is a singer/songwriter from the UK who just started playing music about two years ago. That’s barely anything when it comes to growth and development. I've been playing and composing music for twenty years and I’ll say from first-hand experience there is a lot of growth that happens within the first five years. You discover if you have natural talent and once you get to the ten thousand hour mark it starts to click.
This isn't meant to be a knock on Murray but on his release Self Taught he sounds like a musician who is just getting his start. The guitar melodies stick to major and minor scales, he keeps it in 4/4 and the chords are strummed.
Self Taught is a demo quality release with some notable songs. He opens with “Try” which revolves around a couple of strummed chords and his vocals. It’s a familiar sounding song but well delivered. The song would have been more effective at around three-and-a-half-minutes in my opinion with this parse setup. He sings, “You're not gonna be around anymore someone came and walked you out the door and i died holding my chest as i fell to the floor i tried but i can't pick myself up anymore.”
Murray strums a three-chord progression on “Mary-Jane” while “Get Low” has a bluesy, singer/songwriter type vibe. The female vocals were a nice addition on “Get Low.” He tries his hand at Louis Armstrong and closes with “The Death Of Cupid” where he sounds as if his accent got thicker.
As of right now Murray falls into a case of wait and see. He has potential and I'm sure we'll be hearing some of it as he continues to evolve and starts to develop his own sound. If he is going to stick to mostly solo guitar I think more intricate picking patterns would help with some variety.
Overall, Murray built a solid foundation with this demo EP.
