It would be of no surprise if the idea for Shayna Sands was initially conceived over a round of drinks, for the Texas-based project has a sound perfectly suited for a small tavern. And with production focused on conveying raw energy, they probably sound even better in the friendly confines of your local watering hole. This is music for late Friday nights that turn into early Saturday mornings. Shayna Sands’ four-song self-titled EP Shayna Sands exhibits the hallmark blues twang instrumentation cut from the same cloth as numerous Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and Doors inspired rock n’ roll groups. Sure, Shayna Sands doesn’t break any new ground but they aren’t trying to. These four songs are all about the groove, lending to impromptu dances with the person standing next you. The rolling lead guitar, bouncing bass and steady drumming lay the foundation for groove while Shayna Sands sings of strained love, lost romance and long nights—topics with universal appeal. No particular aspect of the music shines brighter than another as the band is far more concerned with the fun, energized whole than the individual parts. Again, this exemplifies the group’s collective focus on having a good time. No track embodies this more than “Hey Mister”—the longest track on the EP at just over five minutes—which opens for a lengthy jam about three minutes in before a brief breakdown and return to the lead riff. It’s the type of song that the group can play differently every night, feeding off the energy of the crowd. No matter what your musical tastes may be, it’s hard to dislike what Shayna Sands is all about. This is the rock n’ roll that even your most opinionated friend will like; this is the rock n’ roll your parents fell in love over; this is rock n’ roll done right.
