My first thought when listening to the recent EP Singularity from SHEARE was that I swear I have heard it on the radio before. Even if that’s not true the production is on par with the biggest bands in the business. Brandon Sheer is the brainchild behind the music that feels triumphant and full of hope not unlike that of some of the more grandiose Coldplay songs you may have heard. Each song seems to be bigger than the next in its scope as Sheer doesn't seem content doing anything small.
On “Eye” Sheer combines up front and center drum beats with clear guitars and pads as he serves up a rather melancholy verse. As soon as the chorus hits the doves let loose and Sheer belts out “Can you see it in my eyes again.”
“Outside” is arguably the most destined to be a commercial hit. He’s done his homework and combines all the right sounds to find a ubiquitous sound that most people will enjoy. He executes a similar formula as before and combines organ, guitar and a fat electronic beat during the verse before exploding into the triumphant chorus.
I enjoyed the pads and arpeggiated synth he incorporated into “Say.” His voice soars during the chorus that reaches for great heights. The highlight of the four songs was “Alright,” which I felt had the most seamless transitions between the verse and chorus.
One thing Sheer has down is the formula he implements into his songs. Every one of the songs has a huge sounding chorus that soars. Sheer’s music will resonate best with a general demographic of people who prefer top 40 songs while hipsters who are into Arcade Fire, Deerhunter and you can fill In the blank here will probably call this over-produced. I personally embrace the aesthetics and production value although I would love to hear him break out of his comfort zone.
