For eleven years S.H.I was playing a hybrid of covers and originals in countless bars, bike rallies and clubs across the US. In 2013 they recorded and released an EP and then in that same year released a full length. At the tail end of last year they released Headlines which is their most recent release.
Headlines is the type of release that made me nostalgic. I was a kid in the late ’80s and early ’90s and this was the type of hard rock I grew up on. Suffice it to say I was an easy sell. I grew up on bands like Metallica, Guns N' Roses and many others. Although I can’t confirm what the members of S.H.I were listening to when they were younger I have feeling it’s somewhere along those lines.
The band opens with “Marionette 143” which is a great way to start. It’s melodic, a little ugly in all the right places and pretty darn catchy. Those vocals felt like they were straight from the early ’90s to my ears. They continue with “Crutch” which is a bit of an anthem and you might even call it a summer jam.
“Golden State Killer” is where the Metallica influence felt fairly overt. This was more like Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All era Metallica. The guitar leads tear at the seams and the song is a dark, gothic soundscape.
The band almost goes into ballad mode with the title track “Headlines'' while “Push” and “Way Station'' are hard hitting songs that at times reminded me of Alice In Chains. They close with “Fall Away” which felt like another anthem.
This music felt like it was made for purists who appreciate this era of rock. If you grew up in this style you will probably like it as much as I did. Recommended.
