There isn’t too much info out there about Sightseers but here’s what I know. It’s one guy and according to him Sightseers is a simple exercise in not over thinking the music making process. He states that he aims to release EP’s that are written, recorded, mixed and uploaded within two days, artwork and all. It’s a somewhat interesting idea with decent results. The first EP he released is entitled Hidden Valley and contains three songs. As far as I know this is his first and only release under this name. The first track is called “Out of Line,” which is by far the strongest song of the three. It revolves around guitar, bass, vocals and drums and sounds a bit like Deerhunter if they were more into classic rock. The song is catchy, well written and basically showcases some solid skill. If the artist can make make an albums worth of songs this good with better production quality than we would be in for treat “Not Bill Murray” is nearly twice as long as “Out of Line” but isn’t twice as good. It’s drags a bit but overall is still a good listen. The vocals are well delivered and contain some notable guitar work. The last track “Dreamer” is a complete deviation from the first two tracks. It revolves around vocals that are covered in so much hall reverb that you can’t make out what he is saying. He may have intended it to be that way, which actually doesn't sound too bad. A little tighter production would have benefited the song but was certainly acceptable. The vocals are supported by a haunting piano and a dry drum kit. According to his Bandcamp page this album was released in September so I don’t know how much time he plans on taking before releasing his next effort. You would think it would be on a monthly basis but who knows. This album is an appetizer. He can write a good song but the material felt light and barely filled me up. Hopefully, we will hear more from him soon.
