SIMCOE
self-released; 2015

3.6 out of 5

By Megan Gazzo

Simcoe EP brought to us by Simcoe starts off with the track “Lost.”  “Lost” is an ethereal gorgeously golden dusted song that brings me to a happy place. There are some acoustic guitar rhythms that are classic and feel like home. Slow intermittent angelic soundscapes flurry over the grounded riffs like a snowy but warm day. The tempo picks up and the drums are condensed and coiled tightly.

There is a lot about this EP that is like audio mashed potatoes and gravy. The singer’s voice is reminiscent of a storyteller that I have always known.  The next song “Afterglow” is something straight off the top 40 and feels like a hit for sure. The song title says it all. Feels like an afterglow. It is shiny, refreshing and revitalizing. It reminds me of jumping into an icy cold body of water when it’s super hot outside.

You can feel the tingle of the lyrics and the singer run over your whole being. It is definitely a special song. Great for hanging by the rivers and the lakes in the summertime with your besties.  The last song on the EP “Closer” is magical. It asks, “Where does your heart lie, will you ever know, go on dear, walk on the tight rope, go on steal your show, laugh a little harder don’t cry no more.” I love the lyrics on this one, and the transition that the song makes as it enters the latter part of the song when it speeds up.

The guitar and drums hold the backdrop of the song tightly and the magical keys in the foreground in conjunction with the incredible vocal styling of the main singer are just to die for. It is an insatiable gorgeous EP and I wish it were a whole album. It is professional, it is well succinct, it hits the heart deeply and profoundly.

Overall, I think this EP is going to be a sure fire hit. Somewhere in the realm and level of Arcade Fire, there is no way people won’t latch onto this one like a fish on a hook. It is just so beautiful and well done. Advanced, profound and touching.
