Six Times Seven is a band that originally formed in 2011 between Stevie Caldwell (singer/songwriter/guitarist), Ron Levine (songwriter/bassist) and Dave Zimmerman (drums). Despite being around since 2011 the band hasn’t released much material. Their most recent effort Ish is their second EP and it only has three songs. That being said the songs are girthy and give you a good idea of what the band is about.
I usually enjoy female fronted rock bands and this one is no exception. Caldwell has a smooth easily enjoyable tone but can also belt it out when she needs to. The music itself could be considered rock or alternative. It isn’t the most technically savvy thing you will hear this year but it gets the job done. Being a three-piece the music breathes and every element is clearly audible. With that it was especially nice to hear a bass that is so clear in the mix. The first song entitled “Hindsight” has a swampy, grunge ‘90s vibe during the verse but makes a transition to sounding almost soulful and funky during the chorus. It’s all about the vocal delivery in which her voice jumps a couple octaves and makes the song feel upbeat. “Hindsight” is the most single worthy song and the most dynamic song out of the batch. The next song “The Last Resort” rides a cool wave of distorted power chords and rumbling bass. It’s a groove that is almost hypnotic at points. Expect to get woken up as the song progresses. I enjoyed the parts when the guitar feedback panned between the speakers during different measures. Overall, the song is pretty straightforward without many surprises. They close with “One Of These Days” which during the verse trades in the distorted guitars for clean ones, which end up shedding the grunge vibe the previous tracks had. This song feels perfectly suitable for the ‘90s and lies somewhere between the Cranberries and early Foo Fighters. Ish is a solid EP, which is perfectly enjoyable. The band isn’t reinventing the wheel but they have a good amount of talent and skill.
