Slow Motion Suicide
self-released; 2017

3.8 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

Nicky Ingram (guitars/vocals), Mark Leossa (guitars), Anna Smith (bass) and Iggy Krutz (drums) are Slow Motion Suicide. The band took their time polishing an extremely well produced self-titled album Slow Motion Suicide.

The music falls into rock/pop category and all things considered feels a lot more commercially viable than something that would spread in the underground. It’s a pretty stripped back no frills album. Guitars, bass and drums is really about it and I have no complaints there. The sound is full thanks to the production and recording quality.

The band does play it towards the safe side with these songs. There wasn’t a whole lot of experimentation with time signatures, structure or hooks. Suffice it to say the songs felt predictable and not particularly challenging to me but the energy, delivery and emotion was there.

Another thing the album has going for it was the cohesive quality and sequencing. There are plenty of times where an album seems to just wear out its welcome and the artist seems to get a little self-indulgent. With ten songs which sounded connected the album has a great flow from beginning to end.

The album starts off with “Revolution” which is a solid opener although I felt the sample at the beginning was unnecessary. I especially enjoyed the verse on this track and when the chorus hits the band hits a very pop/rocking chorus. Another highlight was “Be Somebody” which was a more chill verse that was exceptional. It’s great song - my only slight issue was when they transitioned to speed up the tempo it seemed almost too perfect as if they went along exactly with the metronome.

“Fool On The Inside” was a personal favorite that had a little more of a ’90s vibe to my ears. I liked the funky bass line and whatever the instrument was during the breakdown.

Slow Motion Suicide is an album that could have commercial success largely in part to production and style which is clear as day. Their music seems a lot  less likely to a surge with a grassroots type popularity. If you are into bands like Foo Fighters, 3 doors down and like minded acts you will want to check this out.
