self-released; 2015

3.5 out of 5

By Ted Rogen

Richard Rourke (vocals/keys/guitar), Will Glass (guitar), Will Woyda (bass) and Scott Cargill (drums/percussion) are Sly Groves. The band recently released an eclectic self-titled six song EP Sly Groves.

The EP starts out with an upbeat/funky/reggae jam entitled “Trouble.” It’s a song that’s hard to not like especially if it were being played live. The band is tight, the singing is damn good and the song is mighty catchy. It’s a tad predictable at times but you can enjoy the moves even though you can see them coming from a mile. The other engaging aspect about the song is the changes in time.

The next song “God and Gold” has a more soulful vocal performance and some exceptional fiddle action. Rourke sings, “Take my god and go home” with conviction but still somehow manages to have some levity within his voice. “Bad Habit” has a vibe that lies somewhere between Everlast and Sublime. I have to admit I’m not a fan in general of the sort of rapping/singing style that Rourke was attempting but I have to admit he is one of the better ones I’ve heard.

“5446 Thats my number/ Ball and chain” could very well be the highlight on the EP. It has the same addictive, upbeat groove as “Trouble.” Rourke’s vocal performance is diverse and dynamic to say the least. He brings a good amount of energy to the table and really carries the song. “Turned Out” is a little slower with some overt, sensual grooves that felt perfect for the lounge room while the closer “So Long” is a delicate, love song that ladies will like.

Overall, their EP is diverse and builds a solid foundation. Hopefully they will continue on this trajectory and evolve to something even better on their next release.
