Son of Gary is a rapper/producer hailing from Pennsylvania who recently released his second album entitled The Divine Degenerate - New Beginnings. The album is a DIY effort where he made all the beats and even mixed the album. The recording quality is decent although sometimes the vocals could have benefitted from more treatment.
The album kicks off with “God Hates Ugly” which revolves around alien like synths, a deep electronic beat and a manipulated vocal sample. I’ll give a warning here that the lyrics here are lude and might be offensive to some people. His lyrics are overtly sexual on the verge of feeling violent. It’s an odd vibe that thrives of narcissism, power and anger. The second song “Break Down” is equally as offensive. He even says on the song that if you are offended you can fuck off. It’s evident from the first two songs the there is underlying feeling of anger. He seems to be pushing everyone away from women to any type of authority. Other songs like “Love Doesn’t Exist” only delve more into the anger, dissatisfaction and misogyny. If there is irony within this song I didn’t find it. The song feels like a cry for help from someone who never got hugged as a child. His best moments are the ones where he sounds loose such as on “I Like Party”. The song at least sounds fun even if the lyrics are too narcissistic. Son of Gary strengths lie in the music. Some of the songs which have an electro club like feel such as on “Re Psych” or “Get Psyched” create an engaging juxtaposition between genres. In all honesty I can’t see Son of Gary having many female fans. The constant lyrics about treating women as nothing more than a piece of meat isn’t exactly empowering. I thought the production was solid and original on a number of the tracks. Hopefully, in the future we hear Son Of Gary dig a little bit deeper into why he is experiencing these emotions because it left me feeling like there was a lot of sadness and pain underneath the words he was saying.
