Sponkers is a goofy word. It doesn't seem to have any inherent meaning according to credible dictionaries but that's the name of a band from Boston that released Bumfuzzle. Although Bumfuzzle does feel a bit bonkers and silly at times it’s awfully good. The band that came to mind was Ween. Similar to Ween the band attempts and pulls off different styles throughout the album. This in my opinion is an exception to the rule.
They open with “Get Well K8” where you are greeted with what I could call a quirky song. The vocals are subdued and at first sound a bit “nerdy” for lack of a better word. As the song progresses it’s like the singer grows confidence. I really liked the vocals which grew on me. The music is subtly unique and inventive.
I really liked the opener but started to fall in love with the band with “Kaleidoscope Genius” which is an exceptional song. They hit upon a carefree, harmonious tone that felt similar to Pavement at their most playful and fun. The band continues to have success with the dreamy and dark “Finch.”
“Que Sriracha” works on a number of levels but the dissonant breakdown that happens around the two-minute mark which quickly coalesces back together is brilliant. The band continues to impress with the slacker inspired “A Whole Lotta Nothin' (Is What I'm Gonna Do” while “The Song (Thanks Bald Asshole)” features a certain theme that fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm might recognize.
The thing that is particularly brilliant about this album is the balance of humor that is mixed with technical ability which seems effortless. Top that off with catchy melodies and you have a fantastic album. These guys are the real deal don’t let the humor blind you to the fact that these guys are superb musicians. Highly recommended.
