When the Moment Arrives
self-released; 2020

3.8 out of 5

By Jamie Funk

St Eriks Street has been busy. Fresh off the heels of The Outprocessing he is back with When the Moment Arrives. This release isn’t skimpy either and contains ten songs. The sound is familiar and digs deeper in the sound I heard a couple of months back. That being said, there seemed to be more variety as well.

Things start with “Leavenworth” and this is an electronic minded song with a lot of processed sounds, synths and more. The backbone however is the bass and drums which really drive the songs. Up next is “Dignity” and really the whole environment shifts. The instruments are EQ’d in a different way. For instance the bass and drums have a different symbiotic relationship. The song is very atmospheric and full of airy elements throughout.

“Lakeside” is almost a mix between the first two songs and an arguable highlight. The song had this almost plastic otherworldly quality. Some of it felt like it was built from ’80s midi sounds just from a parallel dimension.

“Want a Coffee” was the first song that felt almost entirely organic. The song revolves around the lead work on the guitar and perhaps the crescendo is the declaration - “I Want a Coffee.” On “When the Moment Arrives” we revert to a lot of ’80s midi sounds and really have the feel of it all coming from a computer.

“Ready to Launch” and “Fogelstrom” follow this trajectory but sort of felt more serious. Almost like it was the background music to some fantasy show that revolved around orcs and mages. “Creighton” and “Renegade #5” felt like a continuation of this. The last song “Constellation Fantasy” is almost thirteen minutes long. It’s a slow burn of older sounding synths sounds and this song felt like it was made for an old video game.

This is a proper followup and one that shows St Eriks Street expanding his sound in new directions.
