Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, Standpoint Theory is a recently formed post-hardcore band that just released an eleven-song album entitled This Will Be. The band has gone through a number of lineup changes but the two core members Jacob Zimmermann (lead vocalist) and Anthony Zeppetella (guitarist) were the creative forces on This Will Be. One of their biggest strengths is the way they implement vocals - everything from the harmonies, to the dynamics, to the ridiculous contrast between them. On top of that the songs are well thought out structurally and there were a number of times I was quite impressed with their tenacity.
They kick off the album with an intense song entitled “The Mountain Before You (Ft. Paige Cambern).” The first voice you are greeted with is a blood-curdling scream, which sounds like a demon spawn. It doesn't take too long for the vocals of Paige Cambern to enter. Her voice is pretty and serene, which creates an interesting contrast. The song is complex, has a lot of changes and was a good choice for an opener.
“What Was Lost” is another highlight that combines the death metal voice with a more straightforward male vocal. The guitar parts were inventive and caught my attention a number of times throughout the song.
“Eye of the Storm” needs to be mentioned as it sounds unlike anything before it. They break out an acoustic guitar for a minute-long plucking, which I was hoping they were going to form into a full song. As the album progresses the band pulls out a couple of more decent tunes including “Fallout” and “For You.”
Overall, Standpoint Theory is off to a decent start. I thought the exaggerated demon voice was a bit over the top at times and occasionally it felt comical but besides that they have some skill.
