Glow
self-released; 2018

3.7 out of 5

By Bill Todde

With beginnings as a small home studio project, Starcoast has since released three self-recorded EPs and spent time playing shows locally and regionally around the Virginia Beach area. Their newest release Glow was made available for fans and new listeners alike in early May of 2018. The laidback sound of the album perfectly encapsulates the name Starcoast.

The title track “Glow” opens with deliberately strummed chords before being joined by drums and a shredding lead guitar. When the words come, the guts that they are delivered with are able to send shivers down the spines of listeners everywhere. The track itself has a glowing feeling with reverb and echo leaving a residual essence of all of the sounds of the song like a fading sunset. The energy at the epicenter of the song itself brings listeners in without being too overwhelming to appreciate.

“Piece of Mind” is the EP’s closing track. It is also the longest track on the album. It starts slower and more mournful than the others on Glow. Highlighted by long vocal phrases, the track slowly builds on the pounding drums and staggering guitar interjections before finally exploding into a cymbal heavy distorted ball of angst. It is a last goodbye given in a breathtaking package.

Starcoast is the culmination of current alternative music attached to a band with great chemistry and a forward thinking vision. Each of the instruments works in harmony with the other. It is often hard to pick out specifically what makes the sound that grabs the attention of the moment, and that’s because it’s often a combination of reverbed guitars, cymbals, rolling bass lines or belting vocals.

Bands like Band of Horses, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Kings of Leon, Wilco, Cage the Elephant and Alabama Shakes have blazed the trails, but Starcoast will continue to carry the torch of alternative into the next leg of the race.
