Colin Coogan is the frontman, guitarist and vocalist for Stardust Creatures. His recent release a self-titled three-song EP Stardust Creatures shows us a little sample of his talent. The songs are eclectic and while not worlds apart showcase an artist who is still developing a signature sound.
Take for instance the opener “Spaced Out.” I’m not fan of comparing two bands to make one but it's just undeniable that this song sounds like a perfect mix of LCD Soundsystem and Talking Heads. In fact, I would argue that on the verse he sounds like James Murphy and the more upbeat chorus has a distinct David Byrne sound. “Spaced Out” was the highlight on the EP. The song is well written and extremely catchy. From the synth bass to the clean guitars I was thoroughly enjoying the groove on this song. The song even comes with a mystical, eastern sounding ending that kind of came out of nowhere but worked. The second track “Like Gentle Waves” ditches the dance groove. “Like Gentle Waves” starts with gentle guitar picking, bells and the hum from an organ. It’s like an intro to the song. Once the verse hits there is a happy go lucky vibe. At times the song is on the verge of reggae, very much in the same way you heard The Talking Heads attempt it. “Big Scary Monsters” is another deviation going for a slick almost bluesy vibe. This is a certified pop song with a singer/songwriter vibe. The chorus is radio ready and the song rocks towards the end of the song. Coogan is off to a solid start with these three songs. Out of the three songs “Spaced Out” seemed like the style and vibe that worked best. I know the project hasn’t been around very long so I hope to hear more soon. Some more material I’m sure is coming down the pipeline so keep your eye on him.
