Multi-instrumentalist Jon Gilbert and drummer Mike Cairns make up Summerheads and together they create a super mellow alternative vibe that gives their listeners the illusion of a perpetual universe of summer. And just like the season, summer’s filled with both rain and boredom and the bright sun-filled days full of laughter and celebration. The album takes the time to duly embody both the ups and downs of the seasons and always looking towards A Better Day.
The song “Something New” really takes this ideal to heart; “we all want something new, we just don't know how to get it and it’s over much too soon.” This song is soothing and very tranquil and its high notes are accentuated by the chorus and uprising of the main vocalist’s voice which exudes passion and truthfulness.
The song that shares the same name as the album really takes a stab at illustrating the ideas behind the album’s title “A Better Day.” The opening lyrics “I don't say much and yet you can read my every thought,” tells us there is a depth within this relationship that is so hefty that the protagonist doesn’t even know why “I get so emotional about it… it could be a wonderful day if only I could get out there.” This line truly alludes to the theme “A Better Day.”
While listening to this album, I feel like I might be listening to bands from the late 70’s like Simon and Garfunkel and Depeche Mode. Summerhead’s style of vocals and effects is in line with this style of music that’s dreamy, light and effervescent. Yet it maintains a contemporary persona and is completely relevant to modern alternative music. The album is well produced and is a completely pleasant listen.
