The self-titled EP Sunbathers by Sunbathers is a great collection of power/dream-pop collusion. Good songwriting, production and incredible vocals make for a great concise collection of catchy songs.
The band’s main strength is the versatility of their lead singer who moves from falsetto to grit with ease. There is a strong R&B influence throughout the inflections and it works well driving the songs and floating through the other instruments. There are gorgeous harmonies throughout “Glory” and “Summer In The City” as well as the closing track “All Your Lovely Colors.”
The guitar work throughout is also well thought out, contrasting grunging chugging guitars with chiming countermelodies. Again “Glory” really shows off this work with clever layered arpeggios and two fantastic solos, the first with large reverb and the second one searing through buzzing tones.
The rhythm section is tight throughout with lots of drum flourishes in “Summer In The City” and clever use of syncopation and timing in “Daisy” incorporating clicking sticks through the verse and a smart use of silence. The bass is showcased in “Glory” propelling the song with pulsing rhythms and interesting descending lines.
The EP closes with “All Your Lovely Colors” which incorporates volume-swelled guitars, rolling snare drums and incredible harmonies to build up the energy before opening up into a Radiohead-esque acoustic guitar theme. This eventually evolves into clank-y piano making for a great tonal transition.
The band shows lots of promise and has some great songwriting through. The EP is tight and showcases their strengths well; a full album would be great to hear next.
