Residing in Smyrna,Georgia, Supramental Perception is an electronic producer who just released his first effort The Colors Within. The album is a pick of seven of his best songs from his first year and half producing that attempt to represent the seven chakras, which make up the colors within us all. The music is all instrumental and has a bit of Boards Of Canada influence as the drums are huge, usually front and center and you also have a myriad of arpeggiated synths combined with lush warm pads throughout. Unlike Boards of Canada the music here has less of an influence from hip-hop and often feels less ominous.
There is a futuristic feel to the music in the way that you might experience from a band like Fuck Buttons. Sometimes it sounds like you are experiencing interstellar travel in the year 3000 and other times are in a restricted airspace occupied by celestial beings.
The album first song drops with “When The Trees Bow To The Sun.” Warm tones cover hard-hitting electronic drumbeat that exudes a hazy Persian vibe. The song starts off pretty standard but progresses to some formidable sounds especially around the three-minute mark when the distorted bass is grooving and the luminescent synths sparkle.
“Colors Within” has a magnified low end that could get people at the right club dancing again at 3 o'clock in the morning. Throughout the song is fluid pumping squiggly bass lines as ethereal pads penetrate the high end of the frequency spectrum. “Noetic” contains oscillating drones that replicate the sound of warping through a wormhole while “When She Turns Away” is the brightest song on the album and exudes an abundance of positive energy.
“Eyes Closed...River Flows” had some of the best drums on the album. The intricate glitch aspects add complexity to the song.
So while Supramental Perception isn’t quite at the height of artists like Boards of Canada, Four Tet or Jon Hopkins it has more than impressive chops that seem to be just the beginning for him.
