Lifelong friends Ryan Yudez and Clay Meyer began Swim Thru Frequencies as a musical duo. Eventually, the duo became a trio when they added female vocalist Melody Kloefkorn, who contributed her insight and voice to the mix. Then Travis Hildenbrand joined the group as the drummer and percussionist. From there, they started recording their first full-length album, Rhythm of Complacency. After they were done mixing it, they finalized the group with their keyboardist Johnny Bosbyshell.
In many ways, Rhythm of Complacency works as an anthem album for the disengaged youth, the misguided outcasts and the slightly damaged. It portrays poetically haunting stories of love, addiction, journeys and self-destruction. Rhythm of Complacency does not quite classify into one genre; it’s a hybrid of several, but mainly finds its place in a folk and acoustic style fusion.
When Yudez’s deep raspy voice blends with Kloefkorn’s tender vocals, Rhythm of Complacency reaches the epitome of its appeal. It creates a soft and hard quality to the singles. The tracks “Cartographer,” “Her Majesty Reclusive,” “Stoic In The Aftermath” and “One of Them” especially showcase this element. Their blending vocals create a whimsical, otherworldly vibe, one that invokes meditative moments of self-evaluation.
Rhythm of Complacency’s lyrics and melodies begin to create its songs’ mesmerizing stories, but the carefully composed instrumental accompaniments really add the finishing touches to these pictures. Swim Thru Frequencies allows the band’s talents to shine with its purely instrumental singles, “I Am An Aquanaut” and “Interlude in D Major.” After each of these tracks, the band keeps listeners guessing by having two upbeat, rocky songs following them: “Other Languages” and “The Poor Fool.” Each of these songs focus on self-destructive individuals, so the fast pace nature echoes the songs’ characters’ reckless approaches to life.
Swim Thru Frequencies create uniquely beautiful and, sometimes, tragic musical experiences with their artistry through lyrics, instruments and vocal choices. Rhythm of Complacency makes you wonder and get excited about their future albums, because you know you just discovered your next favorite band.
