Vocally driven and in your face, Ten Year Attitude is taking no bull and knocking down the walls of post rock with a signature sound that nods to the likes of early Stone Temple Pilots and Puddle of Mudd. They're a band that takes things back to riff roots and raw intensity, nothing is over produced or sugar coated in the least. The band is based out of NYC and led by multi-talented cardiologist, poet and rock star Michael Friedman. That's a hell of a resume for anyone, let alone the brains behind a full-blown rock project. And this self-titled album Ten Year Attitude couldn't be more fun.
The groove and riff on "Relieve Me" work in tandem to get the juices flowing and Friedman's voice is in typical fashion – stressed and determined, on the verge of screaming but still very musical. Breaking up the tune are segments of chopped full band cuts that drop right into a slamming double bass passage – and then back to that solid riff.
"Grab Me" is just as provocative as it sounds. The guitar and drums are locked in and chunky. Everything drives like a monster truck back to the chorus. I didn't want to have to wait for a verse or bridge before "Sweet lady, grab me while you can." This song could be only two minutes long, just milking that refrain until the sweat began to fall. There's a lot of interpretation in that line. Is it a request for some special attention or a warning to some fine lady to act on her desires? The answer is probably both.
From the first and even the third listen, "High" still seems a little lower in production quality than the other songs but the guitar tone is right on, rumbling and repetitive, patiently awaiting the break of a rocking chorus that showcases Friedman's vocal power and endurance. Throughout the album, he is a consistent sound that matches every song's prerogative. I normally don't put so much praise to just the singer, but this band is very lucky to have such an enhancement.
