The Arches might be the most prolific band in history. According to their bandcamp page they released ten albums since May. They are an instrumental band comprised of Murphy Spark (Lead Guitar) Nova Williams (Rhythm Guitar) Jessica Fury –(Abelton Drum Kit) Nina Blade (Bass, Keyboard & samples)
I gave a listen to most of their albums but my concentration was on Purse of Chaos Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. I can’t say these are the most complex songs ever assembled in fact they felt like vignettes or embryonic ideas that might be impromptu recording sessions.
The band doesn't seem to concerned about tying the songs together in a cohesive manner. I could be wrong but it seemed liked the songs could have been in any order. It felt like an ambient album to me in that way. It felt like music you can just put on and let ride in the background.
The music for the most part is very lo-fi and follows a typical rock band structure except the drums are programmed and very static sounding. I can't say they sound anything like an organic drummer.
Sometimes the guitars are out of tune which might add to the spirit of these songs. Other times they will throw in a track like “MLSTRONIC” which sounds like the music you might hear on your employer's orientation video. Suffice it to say it's better just to listen then go into the nitty, gritty of these songs.
The songs feel so sporadic it's hard to know what to make of them. It's also a case where the whole is greater than the sum of it's part. I can’t say that one particular song stuck out to me out. It felt like passive listening to me and that is not meant to be said as a pejorative.
I have to wonder what The Arches songs might sound like if they slowed down a little bit and put more time into the songwriting and production. We may never know. They don't seem to slowing down and at this rate someone may need to check the guinness book of world records and see if they may break some type of record if they keep at it.
